Crowns

Before appointment:

If your tooth cannot be restored by a Filling, we may advise a Crown after assessing that your tooth is suitable for a Crown. An X-ray helps to makes that decision. There are different options in terms of Crowns and we can decide that based on some technical details as to which Crown will be best for you. It can be either a white (Emax, Zirconia or Porcelain bonded), metal or a Gold Crown. Risks and alternative options will be discussed at this appointment. Some of the teeth with Crown do not root canal treatment in future. You will require two appointments for Crown treatment.

During appointment:

• Appointment 1: If needed, we will numb your tooth with a local anaesthetic. Your tooth will be prepared to make space for the Crown on all sides of the tooth. Then impressions will be taken of prepared tooth to send it to the laboratory. Together, we can decide on the shade of the crown to best match your neighbouring teeth. A Temporary Crown will be placed in this appointment. Please make sure that you avoid biting directly onto the Temporary Crown and keep it clean.
• Appointment 2: We will numb your tooth with a local anaesthetic again at this appointment. Next, your Temporary Crown will be removed, your tooth will be cleaned and a Crown will be placed. We will then check your bite. Please be aware that it will feel strange and different to your natural tooth for a little while.

After treatment:

You can expect sensitivity and tenderness after both appointments. Your bite will feel strange but it should all settle down in 1-2 weeks. If you feel further adjustments are needed after that, please give us a call to make an appointment.
